Michael Somekh is Professor of Photonics in the University of Nottingham and Distinguished Professor at Shenzhen University China, where he was awarded a 1000 talent award from the Chinese government. His research is in imaging, computational optics and ultrasonics.

Within the Enlighten project his particular focus will be directed primarily on the development of novel correction strategies for the focusing light into scattering tissues. Somekh is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in recognition of his interdisciplinary work.
